What comes to your mind when you hear the word pleasure?
For most of my life, I thought pleasure was only about sex - something reserved for the bedroom, something that depended on someone else. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
What is pleasure?
Pleasure is simply the sensation of feeling good in your body, right here. It is the body’s natural way of signaling safety, presence and aliveness.
Biologically, when we feel pleasure, the brain releases neurochemicals that regulate the nervous system, relax the body and create a sense of connection and ease.
The good news: Pleasure is a skill.
The more you practice, the more you can feel it in everyday micro-moments – a taste, a texture, a sound that feels good.
Why does reconnecting with pleasure matter?
It matters because pleasure is a direct line into life. It’s what happens when your attention drops from the head into the body and you allow yourself to feel.
When you reconnect with pleasure, you soften the grip of the mind, calm the nervous system and return to yourself.
A simple pleasure practice
You don’t have to wait for the perfect moment to feel pleasure. You can experience it right now. Try this:
- Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit and close your eyes.
- Take a slow, deep breath into your lower belly. Exhale softly with a gentle sigh you can hear and feel.
- Now, bring your attention to one simple sensation that feels good (for example the air on your skin, the weight of your body on the chair, the warmth of your hands).
- Stay with this sensation for a few seconds and let it fill your awareness.
- Use your intention to let the sensation effortlessly expand through your body.
- Notice what happens in your breath, jaw, shoulders and belly.
This is pleasure. It doesn’t need to be worked for. It’s already here.
